Anyone Who Knew, or family members of Force Men who seved with 1st Lt Wayne E Boyce Company 5 2ND Regiment
Hi All,
I am trying to learn about the life and service of Wayne E Boyce who was a leader in Company 5 2nd Regiment. He received a Distinguished Service Cross Posthumously for his action on 5 December 1943 during the assault on Mt La Difensa. For those who do not know the background of his action here is the citation for the DSC. Note that the date of the action is mistaken 6 December instead of 5 December 1943 this often happens in the haste of preparing awards.
BOYCE, WAYNE E. (KIA)
Citation:
The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Wayne E. Boyce (0-1288690), First Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 1st Special Service Force, in action against enemy forces on 6 December 1943, on Mount La Difensa, Italy. First Lieutenant Boyce's platoon was designated as the assault wave of his company for an attack on two fortified enemy ridge lines. Immediately after starting the attack, the platoon encountered fierce machine gun, machine pistol, and mortar fire, which halted the advance. First Lieutenant Boyce, however fearlessly moved forward, and his action inspired his men to rush onward and assault the position. The first objective having been taken, First Lieutenant Boyce immediately reorganized his unit and led the assault on the second enemy line. Although wounded fatally in this assault, First Lieutenant Boyce devoted his remaining energy to reorganizing his platoon and consolidating its position. His determined courage and aggressive leadership are an everlasting inspiration to those who followed him in his heroic assaults against the enemy. First Lieutenant Boyce's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
Headquarters, Fifth U.S. Army, General Orders No. 8 (January 17, 1944)
Home Town: Jerome, Idaho
Ideally I would like to communicate with others who served with LT Boyce but would like to hear from any family members who heard stories about him. If anyone has any letters from family members that told of their experiences during that battle feel free to post scans of them for all of us to understand what the men endured during this first battle of the Force.
Thank you in advance for your time and input concerning LT Boyce and the valor displayed by him but all members of his unit and others, many who gave their all to destroy the ternary of the Nazi and Fascist Regime and Free the Oppressed of Europe.
Regards,
John
