New to group

I am the son of Fred Barttels, from Harrah, Washington, of the 1st Battalion. Dad died 23 August 1978 in Reno, NV while on vacation. Dad never talked much about his war experiences. One thing I remember him talking about several times was about being attacked by a German aircraft while they were in the Mussolini Canal at Anzio. Dad said it must have been an inexperienced pilot, as instead of attacking down the length of the canal this pilot kept attacking cross-wise. So they would just run to the sheltered bank of the canal and out of his fire.
